The idea of upgrading the performance of a vehicle by swapping out computer chips is becoming more of a reality. Tuners used to rely on wrenches and other tools to upgrade their cars, but that practice is slowly becoming outdated.

As vehicles get more and more complex, the tools required (such as a laptop computer) to modify various components are less likely to be found in a typical owner's garage. On top of that, if an owner makes a mistake, these computer components can be costly to replace.

Since many of the performance upgrades require electronics work, many owners are turning to cosmetic upgrades, such as wheels, body kits, spoilers, etc.

How will this impact the aftermarket industry?

The technology is great. It does require a bit more skill than in the past. Most modifications that get thrown at a car now days can result in an engine light coming on. Unfortunately the 02 sensor (s) will see everything you do to an engine today. Justifiably so, to keep emissions output under control. So, if you are able to make these “tuner adjustments” and do it right, you have a specialty that could make you a lot of money.

As long as there are vehicles on the road, hot-rodders (tuners) will figure out how to make them faster. Industry fell right into their hands and provided them the ultimate hot-rodding tool, the computer. Wow!

I agree with the comments that have been posted so far. I suppose with cars becoming more computerized, tuners have to learn a few new tricks, but the game is still the same. And you're right, I think having a computer in your hands only opens up the possibilities!

On one hand it might be opening up possibilities to tinker with ignition and fuel managemnent. On the other hand it leaves vulnerabilities as it relates to voiding warranties. This opens up an entirely new can of worms...
