They will probably achieve most of their lay-off goals by giving people early retirements. The real problem with GM is that they are handcuffed by their retireee's and the stupid unions. They need to get out of the geriatric health care business and get back to making cars.
The union bottom feeders just don't get it... if GM goes under it doesn't matter what the labor contract says. That's my $.02.

I aggree. The UAW is only after maximum profit, even if it kills GM.

Wagoner and the Mark LeNeve need to execute a 20-20-20 management action immediately-- 1) convince the unions to take a 20% pay cut,
2) reduce the prince of Buicks, Pontiacs, and Chevrolets by 20% immediately [the incentive already of done that] and whack management salaries by 20% with no bonuses until profitable. And spin off GMAC pronto.
