GM set to offer employee discount to all customers

DETROIT -- Now everyone will get the General Motors employee discount - at least for a month.

According to dealers, GM will offer every customer the chance to get a vehicle at the employee discount rate, starting Wednesday, June 1.

Not all details of the program are known, including whether the new discount replaces or is in addition to cash rebates. The deal applies only to 2005 model year vehicles.

GM has been pushing a variety of discount programs to its employees and suppliers, and allowing them to extend the discount to a limited number of family and friends. The new program greatly expands the scope of the discount, particularly to areas of the country where GM does not have a large presence.

The incentive means customers will be able to get a vehicle at a predetermined percentage below the dealership invoice price. Some dealers say the discount can amount to 4 percent off the invoice price.

The program will cover almost every GM vehicle. The Chevrolet Corvette is excluded.

According to GM, the employee discount is not a fixed amount, and the percentage varies per vehicle.

GM is expected to announce the program Wednesday.

Unfortunately for everybody, EVERYTHING GM does is a short term thing...and that philosophy trickles all the way down to the dealer who focuses on today;s business and this months financials while ignoring the work that will make his store stronger 12 months from now...but that's a discussion for another thread. My point is..the retail (management) side of this business thinks short term and that mindset will continue to haunt us at every level in every dept.

I'm not down on GM and believe they'll be just fine (cash IS still king after all) but some help from the govt with a national health care plan would go a long way towards helping out large corporations with legacy contract commitments like GM.... AND low and middle income families.

I do however have a few rants about GM and the american auto industry at my blog if you're interested in reading:

Discounting again and again is only a short term solution, if it is even that.
GM needs product and advertising that drives home safety, styling, and owner pride.
